Why Choose College; A Student’s Perspective

Nursing Graduating Student

I’m a student in the nursing program at KCC. To be honest, I didn’t plan on going to college to be a nurse, but everything lined up perfectly for me to be here and graduate this Spring. I moved to Kauai from the mainland and originally intended to be an engineering major or teacher. But my passion has always been helping people and I found out that I can do that through nursing.

I’m learning a lot through the KCC nursing program. Every day in class is an adventure because I never know what I’ll discover. I’ve learned how to properly place IVs, diagnose a patient, and how to make patients feel comfortable while they’re under my care. I love what I’m learning because it can help me make others better, both physically and mentally.

Besides helping people, I love the interaction in nursing. When I first considered college I wanted to become a teacher. But after working in clinics I discovered that the one-on-one interaction from nurse to patient is a much better fit for me.

Finally, I’m getting an affordable degree at KCC, and it’s one that I love working in. I’m graduating this Spring with no debt and a degree I can put to use. Through my studying, I’ve already discovered that I want to be a psychiatric nurse, and that helping people overcome mental barriers is fulfilling for me.

I’m an adventurer and risk taker. I’m the first one in my family to study healthcare and I moved to Kauai by myself. I’ve learned a lot in my two years here at KCC, but maybe the coolest thing I’ve learned is that I love to help. Even if I were a billionaire, I’d still want to be a nurse. I know that students are always talking about how they want to help others, but I’ve found a way to make my dream come true.
