Chancellor's Message to the Community

Aloha Kauaʻi Community College ʻOhana

May 13, 2020

Aloha members of our Kaua'i CC ‘ohana,

Please let me share my gratitude to each of our faculty and staff for a successful conclusion to this very challenging semester. Many unexpected events converged in a perfect storm to up-end life as we have known it.

This community of learners, faculty, staff and students has each felt the effects of this pandemic in very personal ways, and have met these challenges with a willingness to adapt to circumstances beyond our control.

Mahalo to faculty and staff for taking the many steps necessary to support students. Your efforts to ensure the opportunity for them to complete the semester and be successful are greatly appreciated. Mahalo to our students for the effort you made during these challenging times and for your perseverance to complete the semester.

Congratulations to Jeff Mexia, assistant professor of English and professional coordinator at Kaua'i CC, upon his selection as our 2020 Board of Regents Excellence in Teaching Award. In addition to his outstanding teaching philosophy based on his love of Hawai’i and his dedication to nurturing and inspiring our students, Jeff provides innovative professional training for our faculty and staff. His foresight and ability greatly helped our recent shift to online teaching due to the COVID – 19 pandemic. Mahalo Jeff!

Congratulations to our graduates. Like your classmates, you endured many obstacles and yet remained focused on accomplishing your goals. I hope that sometime in the near future, when it is safe to do so, we will join together and celebrate this important milestone in your lives.

Now as we continue to look forward, and as we plan for Fall 2020, I am sure we will face continuing challenges and new challenges. It is my intention to hold a series of All Campus zoom meetings on June 16 at 1pm, June 18 at 3pm, July 14 at 1pm, July 16 at 3pm, August 11 at 1pm, and August 13 at 3pm to provide opportunities to keep everyone informed of plans and progress toward the Fall 2020 semester.

I hope that each of you finds peace, rest and renewal. Stay safe, stay healthy and be well. It is a privilege for me to serve you as your Chancellor.

Mahalo,

Joe
