2024 University of Niigata Prefecture - International Joint Summer Seminar (8/5-8/8, 2024)

We have an exciting short-term summer study abroad opportunity in Niigata, Japan. 

From August 5 - August 8, 2024, University of Niigata Prefecture, Niigata, Japan, is hosting a 4-day intensive program entitled “Cities and Communities: Thriving Locally in a Global Age.”

1. Cost of Participation 

The University of Niigata Prefecture will cover:

  • Accommodation in Niigata
  • Program fee including program related transportation and field trip, and cultural exchange activities 

Participants are responsible for:

  • Round trip airfare from Lihue to Niigata 
  • Passport application/renewal fee
  • Travel expenses by cab, bust etc. from home in their home country to the nearest airport
  • Expenses for food and beverages in Niigata
  • Personal spending such as souvenirs

2. Program Overview

The focus of the international summer seminar is on sustainable regional and local development of cities and communities in a global age. The seminar aims to provide participating students with extraordinary opportunities to discover first-hand the culture, traditions and industries of Niigata Prefecture and have intercultural exchange with UNP students and local communities. During the summer seminar program students will enhance their understanding on the challenges of regional and local development in Niigata Prefecture and in their respective countries and communities. Through various seminar activities such as special lectures, field trips, and group work, students will share their ideas and nurture local competence on how to solve complex problems and invigorate regional and local communities. These activities will contribute to cross-cultural interaction among the students, expand their horizons, and enhance their potential as future leaders in the global arena.

3. Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in KCC for at least 3 credits  (students who plan to terminate their studies or graduate in May 2024 or take a leave of absence from their home institution will not be eligible)
  • Good academic and personal standing

Please  submit your application documents to the Kaua'i CC International Program Coordinator (kyokoi@hawaii.edu) by May 17 (Fri), 2024.  KauaiCC will conduct an internal screening process and nominate one or two students to the University of the Ryukyu for their final decision.

  • Download the Faculty Recommendation Form and ask your reference to fill it out and send it directly to the International Education Coordinator (kyokoi@hawaii.edu) via e-mail  by the deadline.
  • Complete the Program Application form. 
  • You can either submit an official transcript issued by our admissions and records office or submit a screenshot copy of your transcript page on STAR.
  • Submit the application form and transcript to the International Program Coordinator (kyokoi@hawaii.edu ) by the deadline, May 17 (Fri), 2024.
