How We Inspire...

“Kauai Community College is a Kahua that inspires, engages, and empowers learners and educators to enrich our community and our world.” This mission statement encapsulates the college’s goals, and moreover, what we as Accounting Program educators strive to accomplish
in the classroom.

To inspire students and consequently our island community, we start by motivating learners to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills while honing accounting proficiency. This spring a student shared, “I love this (accounting learning) because in the end when everything balances, it feels good.” That final result subsequent to calculating numerous figures and coming to a precise solution, certainly instill feelings of accomplishment—similar to solving a brain-teaser or maybe exiting an escape room in time. Not just about numbers, learning accounting additionally promote applying skills and instruction to resolve everyday personal money-related issues. Another student recently commented, “I am excited about this learning because I’m starting to understand the finances and taxes of my business.”

Prompting eager minds to ponder scenarios such as how mismanaging earnings of $80,000 may create a worse financial situation than someone using advantageous accounting-related strategies with only $50,000 in income inspire students to bolster learning regarding various legal maneuvers. Accordingly, using gained knowledge and skills to fortify one’s financial life transform into tremendous benefits for students, which consequently ripple out to friends, family members, and ultimately the community at large.
